“When I started my project, I was working with animal leather and I collaborated with a lot of tanners and factories. This allowed me to see this industry’s impact on the environment and the animals as well. I understand that most of the leather sold in the world comes from intensive breeding. This industry doesn’t care about animal welfare and living conditions. These animals may spend their whole life stuck in pens, which leads to lots of stress and disease for them. In addition to this, 90% of the leather tanning is done with chrome (industrial technique). At the same time, the dyeing of leather with toxic chemicals also has a negative impact on both the environment and on human beings. After a lot of research, I was able to change my work towards more sustainable, ecological and cruelty-free materials. Since then, sales have dropped, unfortunately, but I find that my work has a meaning for me and has a positive impact on all points.”

Thanks to switching to cactus leather, now the brand's products have the same characteristics as products made with animal leather... except cruelty. Cactus is a plant which grows in arid zones where nothing grows and consumes much less water as compared to other crops. It is also a natural carbon sink, it has a great capacity for CO2 sequestration. Plus, this material is energy-efficient as it is sun-dried.
